Join Familia on Wednesday, March 8th in honoring our trans sisters who have been murdered in 2017. All of those murdered have been women of color–and 6 out of 7 have been Black–highlighting the specific vulnerability that Black trans women face in a white supremacist and cisnormative society that perpetrates and condones racist gender violence.

The names of the victims:

Mesha Caldwell, 41
Jamie Lee Wounded Arrow, 28
Jojo Striker, 23
Jaquarrius Holland, 18

The vigil will begin at 6pm and will be held on Skinner Green at Mount Holyoke College. The vigil will include a Reading of Names and a moment of silence for each sister we have lost in 2017. We will have each victim’s photo as well as their bios. We ask that all attendees wear black out of solidarity and respect.

Additionally, we understand attendees may or may not be able to stand for the duration of the vigil, and ask that they please contact us at [email protected] if any accommodations need to be made.

Content warning: this event will include discussion of physical violence, primarily in reference to acts against trans women of color.

Some contextual information:
Transgender women, specifically black transgender women, face a much higher murder rate than the rest of the population. Last year, Mic created a tool to document the rising transgender murder rate, after 2016 became the most deadly year for transgender people on record. According to Mic’s numbers, the murder rate for the general population is 1 out of every 19,000. For black transgender women, 1 in every 2,600 is killed.
