SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 9th – we will rally outside of 76 Walnut Park in Roxbury (near Franklin Park and Egleston Square) to demand that corporate landlord Scott Dabney of Alliance Realty meet with tenant organizers regarding major rent increases, evictions, and bad conditions in the 45-unit property. *Wear your City Life t-shirt if you have one.*
One elderly tenant, in an open letter to her landlord, wrote, “I have lived in my home at 76 Walnut Park since 1974, for 43 years! That’s a long time. This apartment this building, this neighborhood is my home. I don’t want to be pushed out of my home. You are insisting on a further increase in rent of $200 (after a rent increase of $150). That would push me out of my home…the pattern is that long-time residents who are people of color are being forced out of the neighborhood. I don’t think that’s right…Because of my disability (missing one leg) I am looking for affordable housing that would accommodate me. However that process takes time. In the meantime, I don’t want any eviction pending because I can’t afford the rent increase.”
